There are two types of people in the world: those who love Gilmore Girls, and those who have never seen it. From 2000-2007, like a lot of teenage girls at the time, I spent one night a week glued to my TV, growing up with Rory and Lorelei and falling in love with Stars Hollow and its residents. I had the pleasure of re-watching and falling in love with the show all over again while I was in college when a male friend of mine discovered Gilmore Girls our senior year and we re-watched the entire series, all seven seasons of it, from start to finish.
Hanna Kozlowska wrote a great Op-Talk piece about Why Are We So Obsessed With ‘Gilmore Girls’? in the New York Times. In this piece she examines the depth of the show, the strength and diversity of the characters, as well as the mark the show left on pop culture. Her conclusion: it’s awesome.
For those of you who are fans of the show, you’ve probably already heard that Netflix is reviving Gilmore Girls with a reboot to be released later this year. The reboot, Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life, will be four 90-minute episodes, with each episode representing a new season – winter, spring, summer, and fall.
In the U.S., we already get to enjoy unlimited streaming and binge watching of Gilmore Girls via Netflix. However, until today, the rest of the world was not so lucky. Starting July 1st, the rest of the world will be able to stream and binge watch all seven seasons of Gilmore Girls, just in time to get caught-up and reacquainted with Stars Hollow and its residents when the reboot drops later this year.
If you want to truly geek out this summer, and go above and beyond binge watching the show, you can start the Rory Gilmore Reading Challenge: read each book referenced in the Gilmore Girls series (warning: there are 339 books).
“I live in two worlds, one is a world of books. I’ve been a resident of Faulkner’s Yoknapatawpha County, hunted the white whale aboard the Pequod, fought alongside Napoleon, sailed a raft with Huck and Jim, committed absurdities with Ignatius J. Reilly, rode a sad train with Anna Karenina and strolled down Swann’s Way. It’s a rewarding world.” Rory Gilmore’s Valedictorian Speech
Here is a list of my favorite Gilmore Girls inspired gift ideas to surround yourself with as you read along with Rory, re-watch the series, fall back in love with the characters, and introduce new friends to Gilmore Girls this summer. Enjoy!
